Sometimes people’s teeth are covered in white spots when they get their braces removed. This is because plaque clings to the teeth and removes the minerals from the tooth enamel. If the plaque isn’t removed regularly (which is common because it’s often tough to brush and floss with braces), then the white spots appear. This can create an unattractive smile. So, to help you prevent these white spots, our orthodontist, Dr. John R. Schouten, recommends doing a couple things.

First, remove the plaque as much as possible. Plaque is a white, sticky film that is tough to see. In order to remove the substance, you need to brush every morning and night and floss at least once a day. If possible, brush and floss after each meal and snack as well. You also need to visit your dentist for a professional dental cleaning. This is especially important if you want a strong and healthy smile.

Second, use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can strengthen and nourish your teeth. With its help, the plaque won’t be able to remove the minerals from the tooth enamel. So, make sure you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste. You can also rinse with fluoride mouthwash, drink fluoridated water, and receive a professional fluoride treatment
