Do you ever have a hard time cleaning your smile because of your braces? If so, you have come to the right blog. Dr. John R. Schouten and our orthodontic team have some tips and recommendations for you that can help you keep your smile in tip-top shape while you’re on your orthodontic journey.
First, scrub your teeth twice a day (more if possible) with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It’s also important to brush with fluoride toothpaste so your teeth can be strengthened and nourished regularly. After you’re done brushing, you can use an interdental brush to clean the hard-to-reach areas around your braces.
Second, floss your smile as often as possible. It’s best to floss after each time you eat. This can also be beneficial in helping you avoid having food stuck in your smile during social hour. When you floss, use a special loop-shaped flossing tool and thread the floss through the space between the wire and tooth. Then, send the floss between the teeth and clean the side of each tooth and along the gumline.
Third, keep up with your six-month checkups. This is important because plaque and tartar gather and grow on your teeth and around your braces hardware. This appointment will involve your dental team eliminating these particles from your smile and keeping your teeth and gums in top-notch condition.
