As you know, whole apples are on the food restrictions list when you are wearing braces. The reason being, biting into an apple can damage the brackets—even pulling them off of your teeth. So, to help you with your apple cravings, we have a good recipe for homemade applesauce with a cinnamon candy sweetener. Just be sure to brush the sugar out of your teeth afterward!

DIRECTIONS:
Wash 2 pounds of cooking apples; cut in quarters and core. Remove any bad spots. Put in a saucepan with 1 to 1/ ½ cups of water, enough to keep them from scorching. Cover and cook over low heat until soft.

Strain through a coarse sieve; sweeten to taste. Add ⅓ cup of red cinnamon candies with the strained applesauce and sugar and return to heat. Boil just long enough to dissolve the sugar and cinnamon candies. Makes 6 servings.

Note: You can try this recipe with lemon juice, rinds of lemon or orange may be added if desired. Cinnamon spice, nutmeg or mace, or a combination of spices, with the sugar.
