Just like a car or any other valuable item, orthodontic braces require regular cleaning and care to guarantee they are working properly. If your braces or teeth become damaged or decayed, this can drastically increase the time it takes to realign your smile.

Braces are not like mouth guards. They are more delicate. If you are planning on playing any contact sports or engage in any activity that can increase the risk of damage to your mouth, be sure to wear a mouth guard over your braces to protect them and your mouth as well as any other recommended safety equipment.

If the worst occurs, do not try to fix the damage yourself. If a piece should break off, do not cut any parts that may be dangling or damaged. Some of the wires are extremely small, so it is important to contact your dentist right away should an accident occur. To avoid your soft gum tissue being poked or hurt by loose wires, cover any sharp points with a ball of wax or putty and contact Dr. John R. Schouten at our office as quickly as possible.
