Once your misaligned teeth have been corrected by traditional braces or clear plastic aligners like Invisalign®, you can enjoy a lovely smile and a better functioning mouth. However, this is not the end of the process. There will still be some tension lingering in the periodontal ligaments that anchor your teeth in their sockets. This tension can cause your teeth and jaw to relapse back into their old position.

To prevent this from happening, Dr. John R. Schouten will provide you with a clear plastic retainer at his orthodontic clinic. This simple mouthpiece is made from a clear plastic material, similar to Invisalign® aligner trays. You will need to use the retainer during the times that your orthodontist specifies.

Just like with the Invisalign trays, you can drink water normally while you have the retainer in your mouth. If you are drinking dark liquids you’ll want to take it out or use a straw. You’ll also want to take it out when eating to prevent damage. Any time you remove it, you should keep the clear plastic retainer in the case we provided you. Improvising a case with a plastic bag or a napkin should only be a last resort.

Each time you brush your teeth, you’ll want to brush your retainer too. Use a soft bristled brush and nonabrasive toothpaste. This can help to clear away any plaque and food particles. Abrasive toothpaste will dull the plastic material, making it easier for others to notice when you are wearing your retainer.
